What is a pre-implantation genetic diagnosis of the embryo?
-The whole world has come to the conclusion that most of the embryos contain a large number of mutations of chromosomes and genes. These mutations can interfere with the normal implantation of the embryos. These can undermine the final development of the embryo, even when its implantation was successful. The majority of the sudden abortions (up to 80 percent) can be caused by genetic diseases of the embryo. They can be transmitted from both parent or other complicated genetic processes.
The processes that happen to embryo during development can proceed incorrectly or simply don’t proceed, resulting birth of baby with abnormalities.
Today, this worrying issue is of great importance in the world, especially when it is revealed that pre-implantation genetic diagnosis can prevent most cases of infertility and predict whether the future baby will have a genetic disease.
How Will the PGD of the Embryo be Helpful?
Thus, this research can help prevent two big issues: infertility and future baby’s genetic diseases.
The last one is especially important because there are diseases which do not have the option of treatment. By this method, we can predict the possibility of these diseases occurrence and implant a healthy embryo into a woman’s body. This is especially important for those parents who have transmittable diseases or could be possible carriers of these genes. Embryo implantation can detect hidden types of the disease; this is a preventive measure that can predetermine genetic diseases.
If one of the miracles of the preceding century could be considered to be the extracorporeal fertilization, than this is simply an incredible achievement: from the smallest embryos it is possible to find out probability of genetic diseases. We receive huge information from one cell taken from the embryo. This is something we could not even dream about 20 years ago and today we say it is 99.4% accurate during forecasting diseases.
Who can Refer to PGD?
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis of embryo may refer to all those families which have problems with fertility or have one child suffering from genetic disease and suspicion that it can be transmitted to the second child. It should be noted that this is also against unspecified infertility, as well as that genetic disorders of the embryo are one of the main reasons of miscarriages.Guaranteeing the implantation of healthy embryos, we receive assurance of having a healthy baby.
How is Embryo Screening Carried Out and its Stages
-In order to start working with the embryo, it is necessary to obtain it in the laboratory conditions and carry out manipulations with it. Such embryos can be obtained only in the extracorporeal fertilization laboratories, where it should be undergone to further micromanipulation. This procedure is called embryo biopsy. It is possible to get the desired result by taking one cell from the embryo, using special laser techniques and only with the help of embryologists.
In the first stage, we obtain one cell of embryo; further 5 day old cells are undergone to biopsy by laser technology. This process is hard, but it is even more difficult to fix the embryo. After fixation it is possible to send it to the exclusive centers of the world, and after 2-3 weeks we can get answers.
It is very important to entrust this work to those who have relevant knowledge and experience.Our embryologists have been trained in Russia and England, and one of our English colleagues, who deals with laser biopsy, is also working at the center.
